Speed up PXE boot in SCCM 2012

Add the following registry key to the SCCM Distribution Point and restart the WDS service:
Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\DP
Name: RamDiskTFTPBlockSize
TYPE: REG_DWORD Value: 16384

For us this made a massive difference from over 5 mins to under 15 seconds!

WARNING! Windows 8.1 Logon Scripts not working – Delay

So you upgrade to Windows 8.1 and think your logon scripts ‘don’t work’ or take ages to run. Hopefully this will save you many hours of head scratching!

Microsoft have now introduced a delay of 5 minutes by default before running any logon scripts after logon! You can change this via a GPO setting “Configure Logon Script Delay” under Computer configuration – Administrative Templates – System – Group Policy

Free Network Monitoring

If you’re looking for network monitoring software for your infrastructure have a look at Cacti. Best of all its Free! I use it to notify me if a switch goes down or if the utilisation exceeds a threshold. It also provides me with daily backups of my router and switch configs. However my favourite feature is the live weather map that’s extremely useful to glance at.
